The Guide to environmentally sustainable procurement helps NSW Government agencies embed sustainability into every step of the procurement process.

Whether you're in the plan, source, or manage phase, the Guide to environmentally sustainable procurement (the Guide) highlights environmental considerations so you can meet mandatory requirements, improve value for money and achieve strong sustainability benefits.

Alongside practical templates, the Guide includes case studies that show how NSW Government agencies are already leading the way on their sustainable procurement journeys.

Supporting each stage in the procurement process

Plan:

  • Consider the environmental sustainability risks and opportunities.
  • Research and implement new initiatives.
  • Calculate costs across the whole lifecycle of goods and services.
  • Fold specific KPIs into your procurement strategy.

Source: Integrate environmental sustainability into tender evaluation and contracts, sharing feedback along the way.

Manage: Work with suppliers to enhance sustainability outcomes by consistently monitoring environmental performance and seeking improvements.

An opportunity for positive impact

Each year the government spends around $40 billion on goods, services, and infrastructure. This presents an enormous opportunity to help lead the transition to a more sustainable, circular economy. By using our purchasing power wisely, we can improve value for money while accelerating our progress to net zero.

Together, we can turn every purchase into an opportunity to build a brighter, more sustainable future for NSW.
